What To Expect At Your Child’s First Dance Class

Your child’s first dance class is a BIG moment - for them and for you! It can be exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. Your child might be talking enthusiastically about starting dance classes, or they might be feeling shy and unsure about stepping into something new. Either way, this milestone can bring up lots of emotions for both children and parents. That’s why we’ve put together this blog - so you’ll know exactly what to expect at your trial class at Opal Performing Arts. Keep reading, and we’ll walk you through everything step by step.

Introduction:

Your child’s first dance class is a memorable milestone, and we want both children and parents to feel comfortable from the moment you step into the studio. Arrive a little early to take a tour, ask questions, and get familiar with the venue. Starting something new can feel nerve-wracking - not just for children, but for parent’s too!

Once class begins, your child will be warmly greeted, introduced to their fellow dancers, and guided gently through their first steps in a fun, supportive way by our lovely teachers.

What To Wear:

For your child’s first dance class, comfort and freedom of movement are key! Dance wear such as a leotard, leggings, or a fitted t-shirt with shorts works perfectly - or simply any form of comfortable clothing that they can move around in. For footwear, dance shoes are ideal, but shoes like joggers are acceptable too. Depending on the style of dance, your child might be asked to remove their shoes during class. It’s also a good idea to tie hair back and out of the face to eliminate distractions, so your child can move freely and focus on the fun!

What To Bring:

All your child really needs for their first class is a water bottle - and themselves!

What Happens In Class:

Each class begins with a warm welcome from the teacher, followed by a warm-up to get bodies moving. From there, children might be introduced to basic dance technique, along with choreography set to music. At Opal Performing Arts, we believe progress matters more than perfection - there’s no pressure to get every step right, just a willingness to try, have fun, and embrace the process of learning.

How Your Child Might Feel:

Every child approaches their first dance class differently! Some might jump straight in with enthusiasm, while others take a little more time to warm up. It’s completely normal if your child feels shy at first or wants to stay close to you. Our teachers are experienced in supporting children of all temperaments, gently encouraging them until they feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to join in at their own pace.

What Parents Can Expect:

At Opal Performing Arts, we make sure parents are well-informed about what happens in class. You can expect clear communication about the class structure and what your child will be learning. Our focus is always on building confidence, friendship, and fun - creating a positive environment where children can thrive. While parents aren’t able to stay in the studio during class, there are opportunities to watch from the viewing window so you can see your little dancer in action without disrupting the lesson.

After The Class:

After their first dance class, children often leave feeling proud of what they’ve achieved and keen to come back for more. Even if they were a little nervous at the start, many gain confidence, make new friends, and start looking forward to the next session after just one class. If your child loved their trial, we’ll guide you through the next steps to enrol and continue their dance journey here at Opal Performing Arts.

Starting dance classes is a memorable milestone for both children and parents, and at Opal Performing Arts, we strive to make the experience fun, welcoming, and supportive, helping your child settle in, make friends, and ready to try something new.
